Our History

Once upon a time, nestled in the heart of Japan, a dream was taking shape, a dream that would change the lives of many forever. In 2008, two passionate visionaries, Lin Kobayashi and Mamoru Taniya, set out on an epic journey to revolutionize education. Their relentless determination, combined with the unwavering support of 100 founders, would eventually lead to the birth of International School of Asia, Karuizawa (ISAK).

After six long years of meticulous planning, the stars aligned, and ISAK finally opened its doors in 2014, welcoming students from across the globe. As a beacon of hope and change, we aimed to shape the minds of future leaders who would strive to make a positive impact on the world.

But this was just the beginning. In 2012, the fates conspired to bring Lin Kobayashi and Roderick Jemison, our newly appointed Head of School, together with United World Colleges (UWC). Upon realizing our shared values, ISAK and the UWC forged an alliance that would prove transformative. After five years of collaboration, on August 1, 2017, ISAK officially became UWC ISAK Japan.

From our humble beginnings in 2008 to our elevation as a prestigious UWC school, we have consistently emphasized the importance of our mission. Our school is deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of trailblazers, innovators, and leaders who will reshape the world in the face of rapid change.

As UWC ISAK Japan continues to write its legacy, we remain steadfast in our pursuit of cutting-edge educational models that will empower others to overcome challenges and make a lasting impact on a global scale. And so, the adventure continues, as our story unfolds with each new chapter, inspiring countless young minds to reach for the stars and create a brighter tomorrow.
