Our History

Once upon a time a dream was taking shape that would forever change many lives. In 2008, two passionate visionaries, Lin Kobayashi and Mamoru Taniya, set out on a journey to introduce a model of education with potential to be a catalyst for positive change in the industry and to society at large. Their relentless determination, combined with the unwavering support of 100 founders, would eventually lead to the birth of International School of Asia, Karuizawa (ISAK).

After six long years of planning and anticipation, ISAK finally opened its doors in 2014, welcoming students from across the globe. As a beacon of hope in education, we aimed to shape the minds of future leaders who would strive to make a positive impact on the world.

But this was just the beginning. In 2012, Lin Kobayashi and Roderick Jemison, our newly appointed Head of School connected with the United World Colleges (UWC). Upon realizing our shared values, ISAK and the UWC forged an alliance that would prove transformative. After five years of collaboration, on August 1, 2017, ISAK officially became UWC ISAK Japan.

From our humble beginnings in 2008 to our elevation in becoming a UWC school, we have consistently emphasized the importance of our mission. Our school is deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of trailblazers, innovators, and leaders who will help reshape the world in the face of rapid change.

As UWC ISAK Japan continues to write its legacy, we remain steadfast in our pursuit of transformative educational models that will empower others to overcome challenges and make a lasting positive impact. And so, the adventure continues, as our story unfolds with each new chapter, inspiring young minds to realize their potential and create a brighter tomorrow.
