Passing the Torch: UWC ISAK Japan Welcomes Arden Tyoschin as New Head of School

Dear UWC ISAK Japan Community,

We are thrilled to welcome Arden Tyoschin as our new Head of School, effective July 1st, 2024. Arden succeeds Malcolm McKenzie, who has admirably served as interim Head of School since October 2022.

Arden joined our community in the summer of 2023 to lead our pursuit of Council of International Schools (CIS) accreditation, securing membership and candidate school status. Over the past year, she has built strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the Board, becoming an integral part of our community. Her forward-thinking yet grounded leadership style prioritizes student learning and empowers them as global citizens. Known for her dedication, care, and decisiveness, she supports faculty and staff, fostering their growth as impactful leaders, making her ideally suited to guide UWC ISAK Japan into the future.

Arden’s extensive background includes leadership roles at Harare International School in Zimbabwe, where she was praised for innovative educational approaches, and over 16 years in China at Nanjing and Xiamen International Schools, gaining a deep understanding of international education. Fluent in English, Russian, and French, conversant in Mandarin and Shona, and currently learning Japanese, Arden connects well with our diverse community, enhancing her ability to lead and inspire.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Malcolm McKenzie for his exceptional leadership during his 20 months as the Interim Head of School. His stewardship has embedded values of compassion, humility, and trust into our school’s culture, leaving a lasting impact. Despite the relatively short tenure, he demonstrated extraordinary project management skill and brought about intentional changes in the areas of academic excellence, international and cultural understanding, outdoor education, student empowerment and a culture of care. Students will fondly remember him for knowing each of them by name and background, and enthusiastically attending all student events.

The Board fully believes that the transition from Malcolm to Arden will be smooth, thanks to their dedication and collaborative spirit. Under Arden’s leadership, we are confident that UWC ISAK Japan will continue to thrive and reach new heights. Please join us in welcoming Arden Tyoschin as we embark on this exciting new journey together.

Sincerely,

UWC ISAK Japan Board of Directors / School Leadership Team
