Fall Project Week Update – G11s Gain Practical Skills!

UWC ISAK Japan Summer School is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Mizuho Financial Group, LLC.

Fall Project Week is finally here! An integral part of our curriculum, Project Week allows students to put into practice our core values through service-oriented leadership projects outside of the classroom.
To start off the week, our G11s have undergone several sessions aimed at increasing their practical skills. On Monday, the weather threatened to throw our plans into disarray, but thankfully, the instructors from Rising Field Corporation came down to our campus to spend their entire morning working on team-building exercises with our students. Everyone had to band together to solve several puzzles that required not just learning how to think creatively, but also how to communicate clearly and effectively within their teams.

Fidalia (G11, Myanmar), shares: “Yesterday’s team-building activities, not only made us understand more about our teammates, but also gave us the experience of working with different kinds of people and made us remember who we are or what kind of person we want to be in our group. This is very precious because it is very important to understand how to deal with challenges and use diversity as a strength.”

Following a successful first day, our G11s came back on Tuesday for a morning of first-aid training. Local firemen were on campus to teach our students how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), as well as how to use the automated external defibrillator (AED) machines. Every single student had the opportunity to practice these techniques on the mannequins! Shun (G11, Japan), mentioned that the experience has taught him “how to be a more cooperative person in terms of saving others’ lives”.

To cap off the day, everyone came together in the cafeteria to attend a business etiquette session, where they learnt how to conduct themselves when meeting external partners, such as the exchange of business cards, which is an important part of Japanese business culture!

For the next two days, we will be having our action days, where our students will start work on their projects, including going out into the community, meeting with external partners, and for some, maybe doing some manual labour! We wish our students an incredibly fruitful Project Week!
