What did you do this summer?
Lien – Vietnam, Class of 2017, attended Stanford’s Pre-Collegiate Summer Institute to hone her creative writing skills. Here is her report:
To me, the first step in changing the world is to change yourself, and with this philosophy, I participated in the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies to improve my Creative Writing skills.
I have always had a huge passion for creative writing and Literature. I gained lots of useful and applicable knowledge throughout my experience at Stanford, both academic wise and daily life wise. I also heard various amazing stories and got to know wonderful people there. Additionally, I strongly believe that literature, as a part of the arts, has an enormous power to change individuals. In English class, we are exploring how mass media informs, persuades and entertains. It is undeniable that the products of creative writing, such as fiction and poetry, are a form of mass media; and I am happy to produce arts that leave a positive impact to the world.
I can’t wait to share my experiences with my friends and teachers when I go back to ISAK!”
「私にとって、世界を変えるための第一歩は、自分を変えること。この哲学のもと、この夏私はスタンフォード大学の高校生向けプログラムに参加し、クリエイティブ・ライティングのスキルを磨いてきました。
私はずっと、クリエイティブ・ライティングと文学に大きな情熱を持っています。この夏の経験で、学業面でも日常生活面でも、実用的で応用可能な知識をたくさん得ることができたと思います。また、様々な素晴らしいストーリーや、素敵な人たちとの出会いもありました。
私は、文学は芸術の一部だと思っていて、人を変えるとてつもない力を秘めていると強く信じています。英文学の授業では、マスメディアがいかに情報を伝達し、人を説得し、楽しませているかを探求しました。フィクションや詩のようなクリエイティブ・ライティングの産物が、マスメディアの一種であることはたしかで、私は世界にポジティブなインパクトを与えるような作品をこれから創っていきたいと思うのです。
ISAKに戻って、この夏の経験をみんなと共有するのがとても楽しみです！」
