University application season is almost upon us! College representatives from all over the world are now starting to visit UWC ISAK Japan. Just last week, we had counselors from a few partner institutions of the Davis Scholarship Program meet with our students and conduct on-campus interviews. We were incredibly thrilled to hear that both sides had fruitful interactions and the counselors thoroughly enjoyed their time talking to our students.

As nearly 70% of UWC ISAK Japan’s students receive some level of financial assistance, the Davis Scholarship Program will greatly boost their opportunities to study at some of the U.S.’s best colleges and universities. The Davis Scholarship was founded by philanthropist Shelby Davis in 2000 to fund UWC graduates. He believed that promising individuals from diverse cultures should have access to higher education, and U.S. schools would become more effective learning communities by coming more globally engaged. The five schools in the pilot program, Colby College, College of the Atlantic, Middlebury College, Princeton University and Wellesley College were given grants to support these students, while every single UWC graduate who matriculated at these institutions received a need-based scholarship. This continues up till today for these five schools.

In 2004, the list of Davis partner institutions burgeoned to include over 90 institutions, ranging from Ivy Leagues to liberal arts institutions all over the country. UWC graduates who are admitted to these schools on their own merit qualify to receive need-based financial aid from Davis philanthropy partners. The Program currently supports over 2700 scholars, and is the largest international scholarship program for undergraduates in the world.

Additionally, international students who wish to attend Japanese universities will be eligible for scholarships from the Japan Foundation. We are excited at what these opportunities will bring for our students!
