UWC ISAK Japan

Safeguarding & Wellness

At UWC ISAK Japan, keeping students safe and supporting their wellness are not separate concerns. Both are the foundation of everything we do. Our approach draws on the philosophy of UWC founder Kurt Hahn, the wisdom of our Japanese context, and more than a decade of experience running an international boarding school.
The result is an environment where students can take on challenges, build resilience, and grow with the confidence that they are supported and in a safe environment.

Safeguarding

Keeping students safe is everyone’s responsibility. Guided by UWC’s core values of personal responsibility, integrity, autonomy, mutual responsibility, respect, and compassion, we are committed to a safe and respectful experience for every member of the UWC ISAK Japan community.

Our safeguarding approach has been shaped by best practices and lessons learned in international boarding school education since our founding in 2014. We have continuously refined our policies and procedures based on our own experience and on developments in the broader field, building an approach that is both principled and practical.

Safeguarding Procedures

Our Safeguarding Policy reflects an unwavering commitment to the well-being and safety of all members of our community. It aligns with the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and affirms every child’s right to be protected from all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence.

Our Designated Board Safeguarding Lead meets regularly with the Safeguarding Team and the Head of School to review our procedures and discuss any situations that may be cause for concern on campus.

UWC Common Standards for Safeguarding

UWC ISAK Japan adheres to the UWC Common Standards for Safeguarding, which set out shared principles and guidelines followed by all UWC schools and colleges worldwide. These standards ensure a consistent approach to safeguarding across the UWC movement.

Reporting to UWC International

If your concern cannot be resolved directly with UWC ISAK Japan, or if you are not directly affiliated with our school, you can report to UWC International at [email protected]. UWC International works with the relevant UWC entity to address concerns fairly and promptly.

We commissioned a Holistic Pastoral Care and Organizational Culture Diagnostic Review that was published in 2022. This was an independent evaluation that has since informed how we think about and implement safeguarding at every level of school life. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions.

Wellness

We believe that supporting the whole person, mind, body, and spirit, is essential to our students’ growth and success. Our approach to wellness draws on Kurt Hahn’s emphasis on compassion and resilience, and on the Japanese expression “Ame futte ji katamaru” (雨降って地固まる): “the ground becomes firm after rain.” Challenges are not obstacles to wellness; they are part of how it is built.

Health & Wellness Center

Our Health & Wellness Center, Taniya Lodge, serves as the hub for student wellness on campus. It houses our Counseling Office, where students can access mental health support, and a fully equipped clinic for physical health needs. The Center also includes a zen/meditation room and a fitness room, providing spaces for rest, reflection, and physical activity.

Boarding School Life

Our boarding program creates a nurturing, inclusive community where students from diverse backgrounds live and grow together. House parents and our residential team work closely with students to support their wellness in all aspects of daily life.

Outdoor Education

Our Outdoor Education (OEd) program gives students the chance to connect with nature, develop leadership skills, and build resilience through physical challenges. From hiking to team-building exercises, OEd helps students develop responsibility and an appreciation for the natural world.
