This page covers the application process for direct entry into Grade 10, the start of our three-year program. We do not accept direct applications for Grade 11 entry. If you are already in Grade 10 and wish to apply to a UWC school, you can do so through the UWC national committee in your country of residence or citizenship or through the Global Selection Programme (GSP).

Students studying in Japanese schools on the Japanese academic calendar may opt into receiving their decision early. This does not affect their chances of selection.
All documents must be submitted by the application deadline. Full guidance is provided in the online application.
You will also need to provide contact details for two references: one academic (a teacher) and one non-academic (an adult who knows you well and is not a family member, such as a coach, mentor, or community leader). Both must submit their reference forms before the application deadline.
Create an account in our online application system and submit a registration form. This will take approximately 15 minutes.
If you are eligible, you will receive an email inviting you to complete the full application form within one week. Check your spam or junk folder if it does not arrive.
The full application includes sections for both the applicant and a parent or guardian. It includes several short-answer questions (up to 250 words each), one longer response (up to 500 words), and two videos (maximum two minutes). Allow plenty of time to complete this well.
Enter the contact details of your academic and non-academic references. The system will send them an automatic request. References can be submitted in English or Japanese. Ask your references to check their spam folder if they do not receive the email.
Upload all required documents before the deadline.
Pay the non-refundable application fee of 20,000 JPY and submit your application. See the online application instructions for details.
Applicants who are successful at Stage 1 will be contacted by email and invited to an online interview and group assessment. All final assessments are conducted online.
The written application and interview are in English. Japanese-speaking parents may complete the parent section of the application in Japanese.
We do not require your school to submit official records as part of the initial application. Unofficial copies of report cards, progress reports, or exam results submitted by the applicant are sufficient at this stage. Students who receive an offer will be asked to submit official records at a later date.
An academic reference from a current teacher is ideal, but not required. If that is not possible, we will accept a reference from a previous teacher or another person who knows you in an academic context.
No. We are unable to accept mid-year transfer students.
No. Residential life is a core part of the UWC ISAK Japan program. All students are required to live on campus and participate in residential life.
Each year, we aim to fill all Grade 10 places through the standard admissions cycle. However, if spaces become available, we may open a late application period, typically running from April through June on a rolling basis. This is not guaranteed and families should not plan for it.
If a late period opens, applicants follow the same process as regular applicants. Decisions are usually released within one month of submission. Offers are only made if space remains available.
To explore this option, contact [email protected] before beginning an application.
Late applicants must also meet the following additional requirements:
Waitlisted applicants who did not request financial assistance are considered alongside late applicants. Those who requested financial assistance are considered separately if additional funding becomes available.
Yes. All students enrolled at UWC ISAK Japan are UWC students, regardless of whether they applied directly for Grade 10 or were selected through a national committee or the GSP for Grade 11.
No. Students who enrol in Grade 10 automatically continue through to the IB Diploma Programme. There is no need to reapply.
