Yuichiro – Japan
Class of 2017
I was not necessarily looking to attend a boarding school. I wanted to attend UWC ISAK Japan for a variety of other reasons. However, I have come to realize that the fact that UWC ISAK Japan is a boarding school is a crucial part of the experience of practicing understanding, accepting diversity and teamwork.
Why did you choose to attend UWC ISAK Japan?
This school offers a safe environment to take any kind of risk. When I was in my old school council, the school always tried to avoid risk and did not allow us to work on our new ideas. Here I am encouraged to take more actions. Though it is not an easy process, there are a lot of skills that I have developed which will enrich my future. Also, since I was in a public school in Japan, I was not able to have a wide perspective by having a conversation with others from different backgrounds. I really wanted to gain a different view point so I could think outside of the box.
How has UWC ISAK Japan impacted your life?
The academics here have impacted the way I see problems that are occurring around me and the world. In Japanese public school, we were always given a question to solve, and we just learned how to solve it. But here we start by finding what is the problem, why is it a problem and how it is related to us. This has made me realize that uncovering problems is one of the most important things we need to work on.
How has your decision to attend boarding school affected your relationship with your parents?
I was very close to my parents before I came to UWC ISAK Japan. Even though we are not physically together, I still call them often to tell what is happening, as well as my parents tell me their updates, too. I love my parents.
What is your favorite part of daily life here?
I like that everyone (including teachers) cares for each other like a real family. Advisory is one of my favorite actvities, where we can share whatever we feel without hesitation. And we also have fun together with things like movie nights and picnics.
What have you learned about yourself by being part of the UWC ISAK Japan community?
I now can confidently say that there is only one Yuichiro Kanaoka, and I am a unique human in this world.
