Abha – India Class of 2017
I spent most of my time alone with my family and have a rather introverted character. The only source of influences were my family and media, like books, magazines and television, which taught me about the world. I felt that attending a boarding school would broaden my horizons towards knowing more about people my age and getting used to staying together in a community with a younger age group.
Why did you choose to attend UWC ISAK Japan?
Karuizawa is a gorgeous place and the school’s emphasis on leadership and diversity seemed very unique. Although it is located far away from the city, the campus is modern and connected to the world, which makes for a realistic and exciting community. I really wanted to know more about students my age from other countries.
How has UWC ISAK Japan impacted your life?
I have become a more liberal, outgoing and relaxed individual, by embracing a new lifestyle and making new friends. I’ve learnt so much more from different streams of learning and influences besides just school and textbooks, and am actively trying to take every opportunity I can to learn more about the world and create a positive effect on society. I’ve also become more independent in traveling back and forth from India alone, which also introduces me to a new sphere of learning.
How has your decision to attend boarding school affected your relationship with your parents?
My parents are more worried perhaps, since I spend less time speaking to them and am not as easily influenced as I was. While they allow me a certain degree of freedom, going to away to school has proven that I really can live by myself and enjoy it.
What is your favorite part of daily life at UWC ISAK Japan?
I really enjoy mealtimes when we can mingle with teachers and students, speaking about nothing specific but learning a lot from each other anyway.
What have you learned about yourself by being part of the UWC ISAK Japan community?
I have learnt that I have potential just like every other student and if I practice hard enough, I can get better at anything. I have also learnt that while it is good to be defensive to stand by personal beliefs, it is just as important to understand other views as well.
