"There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less."
-Kurt Hahn, UWC Founder
About Outdoor Education
The Outdoor Education ("OEd") program is a core part of the UWC ISAK Japan experience. As a component of our Physical Education curriculum, it provides a hands-on educational experience through a wide range of activities. These include everything from hiking and snowshoeing to canyoning and overnight camps. Students can also propose their own journeys, which they plan and navigate themselves.

Outdoor Education Mission
Our mission is to develop students’ ability to embrace discomfort in the pursuit of personal growth through a localized education that fosters responsibility and respect for each other and the environment. Outdoor Education enables students to not only experience the natural beauty which surrounds UWC ISAK, but also develop new leadership and teamwork skills, and reflect on themselves in the process.
Choose Your Stream
In September and January, all students identify a stream that reflects their interest (regardless of ability) in pursuing outdoor education.
Sekionsan (Exposure)
Experience different outdoor activities and settings while taking time to reflect on the educational, recreational and leadership value in each experience. Students who choose the Seikisonsan stream will experience a minimum of one overnight camp and three outdoor activities over the course of the year. You just may discover you have a passion for the outdoors!

Kurofuyama (Development)
Build your skills by identifying an area in which you would like to receive additional training, such as mountaineering or camping. The Kurofuyama stream provides students training sessions to develop their skills and plan their own adventure or expedition as a group of equals.
