Steam Train Excursion to Takasaki Town

2017-11-08 by UWC ISAK Japan

At UWC ISAK Japan, we strive to give our students the opportunity to explore Japan. One way they can do this is through excursions that run almost weekly to beautiful sites such as Matsumoto Castle. This past weekend, our students got a truly unique experience with an excursion to Takasaki town on an actual steam train! Organized by Mr Iwata, who is himself a steam train enthusiast, students got to ride an antique carriage dating back to the 1930s. The carriage was hauled by a D61-type steam locomotive which, according to Mr Iwata, is considered one of the most beautiful steam locomotives in Japanese history.

“The steam train ride was a really pleasant experience. I loved how the train felt so vintage and authentic, and looking outside of the wooden windows at the view of autumn hills enhanced it all.”
-Vidya (Class of 2019, Indonesia)

After the train ride, students explored Takasaki town, which is the largest town in our neighboring prefecture, Gunma. We are pleased that our students had an enjoyable time, and look forward to more exciting stories as they continue to discover Japan!
